A Proud Declaration Of A Lesbian

I did not choose to become a lesbian.
I simply am.
I did not teach myself to like women.
I just did.
I did not consciously will myself to fall in love with a woman.
But love have I.
I love my life.
I thank God He made me this way.
I am not ashamed of my uniqueness.
I am happy with my life.
I do not take kindly to comments that I am abnormal.
I do not take kindly to comments that I am not a child of God.
I do not understand why others insist that we live by their rules;
to live by what they call their "standards".
I am what I am, I cannot change what is essentially me
I am a woman who loves another woman.
I am a woman who needs another woman.
I am a woman who is happy with another woman.
And most importantly,
I am a woman who is loved back by another woman.
I never said I was a man
I never said I wanted to be one
Although I dress like one
it doesn't mean I think I am one
It's just the way I dress
It's just the clothes I'm comfortable in
It doesn't change my sex in any way
I'm still a woman proudly wanting to be with another woman,
proudly loving another woman.
Why marriage?
Well, why not marriage?
Some have been tying the knot at some holy union ceremony somewhere.
I guess unions are okay.
Domestic partnerships, too.
But it's not what we really want.
It's not what we need.
Unions are not marriages.
And marriage is what we want and need.
We want to have what man and woman have in marriage.
The right to belong to each other.
The right to be recognized by other people that they belong to each other.
The right to start a family and raise children TOGETHER.
The right to own property TOGETHER.
The right to be by each other's side in sickness and in health.
The right to grow old together.
The right to stay in each other's lives till death do us part.
I'm not ashamed to say that this is what I want.
A lot of gays and lesbians want the same thing too.
What is wrong with wanting to settle down with someone you REALLY love?
What is wrong with wanting to build a life with someone you REALLY love?
I am a lesbian.
I did not choose to be one.
But I am one.
I am proud to be one.
